Strategy begins by knowing the boundary of control

“Some things are in our control and others not.”

Enchiridion, Chapter 1 ↗

At a glance

  • Good strategy begins not with outcomes we cannot command, but with actions we can control.
  • Distinguishing judgment and action from external results reduces anxiety and increases agency.

Today’s reflection

For Epictetus, what lies within our control includes judgment, choice, desire, and action. Outcomes, reputation, status, and other people’s responses are never completely ours. This is not withdrawal from the world, but a refusal to make inner steadiness hostage to results.

  1. Strategy begins with controllable actions, not with the target alone.
  2. The harder we try to control reputation directly, the more easily judgment becomes distorted.
  3. Anxiety often grows from a mistaken picture of responsibility; separating action from result restores agency.

Knowing the boundary of control directs time and attention toward what can genuinely be changed. It is a practical principle for repeated sound judgment amid uncertain markets and organizations.

Practice for today

Divide one important project into two columns: ‘up to me’ and ‘not up to me.’ Spend today’s time on the left-hand column, and observe the right without surrendering your calm to it.

Question for today

Am I worrying about the result, or acting on what can actually change it?
